Owners of dogs that attacked 6-year-old girl going to jail for keeping dangerous animals

MICHIGAN -- The owners of three pit bulls that mauled a 6-year-old girl in August 2010 are going to jail for keeping dangerous animals.

Retired Jackson County Circuit Judge Edward Grant sentenced Brian Nace, the owner of two of the pit bulls, to 120 days in jail with credit for a single day served. He will serve 90 days immediately and will not spend anymore time in jail if he complies with all court orders and conditions.

Nace, 36, also will be on probation for five years. He must complete 240 hours of community service, he cannot possess, own or have any animals in his home, and he cannot have contact with the co-defendant, Jasmine Bailey.

Grant sentenced Bailey, the owner of one dog and Nace's live-in girlfriend, to 180 days in jail with credit for a day served.

While Nace has no past history of criminal activity, Bailey does and Grant did not give her probation.

Bailey's previous performance on probation was "disastrous," Grant said.

The three dogs attacked Tyah Norris, now 7, inside Nace's fenced yard behind the home he shared with Bailey on Mantle Avenue in Blackman Township. Tyah had extensive injuries to her head and face.
